ASTM A240 301LN Stainless Steel Composition & Work‑Hardening Properties

ASTM A240 301LN (UNS S30153) is a nitrogen‑alloyed, high‑strength austenitic stainless steel grade under ASTM standards. With 16–18% chromium, 6–8% nickel, and added nitrogen, it provides higher yield strength, improved work‑hardening capability, and enhanced weld stability compared with standard 301.
301LN develops significantly higher strength during cold working while maintaining good ductility, making it suitable for high‑strength sheet components, transportation structures, architectural elements, and elastic parts. Its corrosion resistance is superior to conventional 301, performing well in atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments. 301LN is supplied as cold‑rolled sheets, strips, and coils. It is widely used in automotive trim, mechanical components, façade systems, clips, springs, and reinforcement parts. As a nitrogen‑strengthened variant of 301, it offers an excellent balance of strength, toughness, and formability.
