ASTM A240 301 Stainless Steel Composition & Work‑Hardening Properties

ASTM A240 301 (UNS S30100) is a high‑strength austenitic stainless steel grade under ASTM standards. With 16–18% chromium and 6–8% nickel, its lower nickel content compared with 304 provides significantly higher work‑hardening capability. Strength increases rapidly during cold working, making it suitable for high‑strength sheet components.

The grade performs well in atmospheric and mildly corrosive environments and is widely used for elastic components, automotive trim, transportation equipment, architectural structures, and mechanical parts. Cold‑worked 301 offers high strength and good spring properties, making it suitable for clips, springs, fasteners, and reinforcement components. 301 is supplied as cold‑rolled sheets, strips, and coils. It is commonly used in appliances, transportation systems, architectural applications, and precision‑formed parts. As a work‑hardening austenitic steel, it provides an excellent balance of strength, ductility, and formability.
