SUS 310S Stainless Steel: JIS-Standard Reliability

SUS 310S, specified under Japan’s JIS G4304 standard, is a variant of 310S tailored to meet Japanese industrial requirements, with a chemical composition nearly identical to its ASTM counterpart: 25% chromium, 20% nickel, and low carbon (≤0.08%). This consistency ensures it shares core properties but adheres to strict Japanese quality controls, emphasizing precision in manufacturing.

A defining feature of SUS 310S is its enhanced purity, with minimized sulfur and phosphorus content, which improves ductility and toughness—critical for forming complex shapes in high-heat machinery. It exhibits remarkable resistance to high-temperature corrosion, particularly in oxidizing and carburizing environments, where it outperforms grades like 316L in longevity.

Its key role is to serve as a reliable material in high-heat industrial processes, leveraging its ability to withstand intermittent temperatures up to 1,000°C (1,832°F) without significant degradation. The grade’s advantages include excellent formability, allowing it to be rolled, welded, or forged into custom components with ease, and compatibility with high-temperature alloys in assembly.

SUS 310S finds widespread use in Japanese manufacturing sectors, such as steel mill furnaces, ceramic kilns, and automotive exhaust systems. It is also favored in semiconductor production equipment and heat exchangers, where its JIS certification guarantees consistency—vital for industries prioritizing standardized, high-quality materials.
