904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel: Versatile Corrosion Resistance in Severe Environments

904L is a super austenitic stainless steel with a high nickel (25%), chromium, molybdenum (4.5%), and copper content, designed to withstand severely corrosive conditions. Unlike duplex grades, it offers excellent formability and weldability, with a tensile strength of 590 MPa and good toughness across a wide temperature range (400°C to 600°C).
Its low carbon content minimizes carbide precipitation, ensuring resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and organic acids like acetic acid—key for chemical processing. It outperforms 316L in pitting resistance and chloride stress corrosion cracking, making it suitable for battery acid, uranium oxide, and zinc sulfate handling.
904L finds applications in chemical processing equipment, pharmaceutical production, and sulfuric acid pickling systems. It is also used in offshore oil and gas facilities, seawater condensers, and pulp/paper machinery. Its ability to resist diverse corrosive agents and maintain structural integrity under high temperatures makes it a premium choice for industries demanding long-term reliability.
