ASTM A240 317L Stainless Steel Composition & High‑Molybdenum Corrosion Resistance
ASTM A240 317L (UNS S31703) is a high‑molybdenum, low‑carbon austenitic stainless steel grade under ASTM standards. With 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and 3–4% molybdenum, it provides significantly enhanced resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride‑rich environments compared with 316L.
The low‑carbon design minimizes sensitization during welding, making 317L suitable for chemical processing equipment, seawater systems, acidic media, food‑processing installations, and high‑purity systems. It maintains excellent weldability and retains corrosion resistance after welding.
317L is supplied as sheets, plates, strips, tubes, and bars. As a high‑molybdenum upgrade to 316L, it delivers superior performance in aggressive corrosive environments across chemical, marine, and high‑cleanliness industries.
