416 Stainless Steel Composition & Free‑Machining Martensitic Properties

416 (UNS S41600) is one of the most free‑machining martensitic stainless steels, enhanced with sulfur to improve turning, drilling, and threading performance. As a typical free‑machining stainless steel, it offers excellent machinability while maintaining heat‑treatable strength.
Although its corrosion resistance is slightly lower than 410, 416 excels in automatic machining and precision component production. It is widely used for bolts, nuts, gears, shafts, valve components, and electronic hardware.
416 is supplied mainly as bars, wires, and selected plate forms. It is ideal for machining‑intensive applications requiring strength and moderate corrosion resistance.
